Ruhe vor dem Sturm - The Calm before the Storm

Der Anblick der zwei Bachen am Ufer der Aare war schon aussergewöhnlich. In der Vogelwelt ist es aber im Moment ruhig. Die Jungvögel sind ausgeflogen. So sind auch die beiden Distelfinken, die wir einen Monat lang täglich mehrmals ums Haus herum gesehen haben, von einem Tag auf den anderen verschwunden.

Ich denke, dass das die Ruhe vor dem Sturm ist, denn die Zugzeit steht bevor. Einige wenige Arten wie der Kuckuck und die Mauer- und Alpensegler sind schon fort. Im September und frühen Oktober kommen dann die Vögel aus dem Norden bei uns vorbei. Wir werden wieder vielen Watvögeln begegnen können, die bei uns nicht oder nicht mehr heimisch sind. Bis dann freuen wir uns an dem, was es bei uns auch in ruhigen Zeiten zu sehen gibt.

The sight of the two female wild sows on the banks of the Aare was truly extraordinary. But things have quieted down in the bird world. The young birds have fledged. Even the two European Goldfinches that we saw several times a day around the house for a month have disappeared from one day to the next.

I think this is the calm before the storm, because migration season is just around the corner. A few species, such as the Common Cuckoo and the Common Swifts and Alpine Swifts, have already left. In September, birds from the north will begin to pass through. We will once again be able to see many wading birds that aren’t—or are no longer—native to our area. Until then, we’ll enjoy what there is to see here, even in quiet times.
