Erste Frühlingstage - Early Spring

Es war uns ein sonniger Tag versprochen. Aber er begann grau. Alles war in Nebel gehüllt. Als ich am Morgen früh im Kaltbrunner Riet eigentlich hätte zu beobachten beginnen wollen, sah ich - nichts. Es dauerte über eine Stunde, bis sich der Nebel auch nur einigermassen lichtete und ich wenigstens die grossen Vögel – wie die abgebildete Graugans – erkennen konnte. Die Kohl- und Blaumeisen hörte man zwar, sie waren aber kaum zu sehen, ebenso wenig wie die Schwanzmeisen, die lange Zeit um mich herumschwirrten. An Fotografieren war nicht zu denken! 

We had been promised a sunny day. But it started out gray. Everything was shrouded in fog. When I wanted to start observing early in the morning in Kaltbrunner Riet, I saw - nothing. It took over an hour for the fog to lift even slightly so that I could at least make out the large birds, such as the Greylag Goose pictured here. I could hear the great tits and blue tits, but they were hardly visible, nor were the Long-tailed Tits that had been flitting around me for a long time. Taking photos was out of the question!

In Schmerikon war es schon bald Mittag, und nur wenig besser. Immerhin konnte ich nun ein paar Schwanzmeisen sehen, die auf ein paar Bäumen hintereinander her jagten.

It was almost noon in Schmerikon, and conditions were only slightly better. At least I could now see a few Long-tailed Tits chasing each other around a couple of trees.

Auch an der Mündung des Linth-Kanals hing im Hintergrund noch Nebel herum, der für eine fantastische Stimmung sorgte.

At the mouth of the Linth-Canal, too, there was still fog hanging around in the background, which created a fantastic atmosphere.

Doch plötzlich tummelten sich ganz in meiner Nähe zwei Rohrammern gar nicht scheu im ersten Sonnenlicht! Da war ich fast zu nahe zum Fotografieren.

But suddenly and very close to me two Reed Buntings were frolicking in the first sunlight, completely unafraid! I was almost too close to take pictures.

Einen letzten Halt machte ich im Stampf bei Jona, wo ein paar Grosse Brachvögel in einiger Distanz zu sehen und zu hören waren. Verschiedenerlei Enten, natürlich viele Blässhühner und eine Ansammlung von weit über 50 Lachmöwen waren anwesend. Und eine dieser Möwen demonstrierte sehr schön, was Stosstauchen ist.

I made one last stop in Stampf near Jona, where I could see and hear a few Curlews at a distance. Various ducks, lots of coots, of course, and a flock of well over 50 Black-headed Gulls were present. And one of these gulls demonstrated very nicely what plunge-diving is.

Und natürlich ist es jetzt auch langsam an der Zeit, an den Nestbau zu denken!

And naturally it is about time to think about building a nest!
