Ebro Delta and Beyond

In April of 2023 we spent two weeks in Catalunya. After a short stay in Barcelona we met Al Henderson of EbroDelta Birding for a week of guided tours. We started in the huge Ebro Delta (about 300 square kilometers) somewhat south of Tarragona. It was amazing: When we were eating Paella for lunch in the middle of the delta on the first day, we had already seen some 60 species. After two days we left the delta to visit the vulture project at Mas de Bunyol in Valderobres for a day. There were probably some 250 plus Eurasian Griffons present when the feeding began at 11am. What a spectacle! We then spent almost three full days on the plains of Lleida, observing Golden Eagles, Short Toed Eagles, Montagu Harriers, various larks and pipits, Nightingales, Little Owls and much more. We finally spent the last afternoon on the Ebro by boat, watching all kinds of herons, an Osprey, a Black Kite, a Cuckoo, Penduline Tits, and, and, and … After that amazing week we rented a car and drove north, where we visited not only the Dalì museum in Figueres, but also the nature reseve of Aiguamolls del Empordà – again very much worth the visit. Let me just add that we can highly recommend Al if you plan to visit the delta. I actually learned about him through Instagram (@ebrodeltabirding). You will find him at www.ebrodeltabirding.com where you can also review the programs he offers.
